Picking the Right Hosting Package

Picking the Right Hosting Package

Inventive Hosting offers a wide array of different hosting services. These services range from traditional shared hosting to load balancing, multi-server clustered solutions. Each hosting plan offers its own set of pros and cons. If you are considering a hosting plan but are unsure of which type of hosting service you require, we encourage you to use this article as a guide for selecting a hosting plan that fits your needs.

There are three main things to consider when choosing the right hosting plan for you: projected budget, intended use, and upgradability.

Of course the most important thing to consider is price. Regardless of what you’re trying to accomplish with a hosting plan, be it for commercial purposes or personal use, the price of the plan needs to fit logically within your allocated budget. All of our plans can be purchased at a monthly or yearly rate. Plans purchased on an annual basis receive one month free of charge.

What are you going to be using this hosting plan for? If you wish to start your own personal blog, a shared hosting plan may be perfect for you. Starting a web development company? Consider a VPS for root access to your server. Hosting a popular forum or social media site? The horsepower and isolation of a dedicated server will ensure your site is up and running no matter how busy it gets.

An extremely important, but often overlooked, aspect of web hosting is upgradability. What does this mean? It basically boils down to a simple question–what’s involved in upgrading your hosting plan? Upgrading a shared hosting or VPS plan, for example, is a seamless process and requires no downtime. But let’s say, for example, that your business is growing fast and your site can no longer function correctly within the confines of a shared hosting space. In order to keep the site online, you’re going to need to upgrade to a dedicated server ASAP. Upgrading from one of these plans to a dedicated server, however, often require changes in DNS and may result in downtime while the account is transferred and DNS propagates. For this reason, it would behoove you to consider a plan that will fit your needs into the foreseeable future.

Let’s take a look at the different types of services we offer along with the pros and cons of each!

Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is the most cost effective and economical type of hosting plan we offer. A shared hosting plan is a single user account that is being hosted on a much larger server with many other users and their respective accounts. We offer our shared hosting plans with cPanel, making account management extremely easy. This type of hosting is best for simple, personal sites and blogs. Shared hosting is not meant for production level sites or for individuals who require root access to their account.

 Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Different options available
  • Little to no experience required to manage account
  • Large amount of resources allocated to each account
  • All shared hosting options come fully managed

Cons:

  • Server has many users on it
  • Every user account on same IP address
  • Vulnerable to intentional/unintentional resource abuse by other users

Virtual Private Server

VPS accounts are great for developers that require root access to their hosting account. Also known as “semi-dedicated,†this type of hosting service mimics some of the qualities of a dedicated server, only with a smaller price tag. Technically speaking, we use the OpenVZ virtualization software to partition the resources of a much larger main server node. These partitions are the individual VPS accounts. Due to the nature of the provisioning process, these accounts cannot use any more resources than they are allocated. For this reason, we say that VPS accounts are not meant for production level purposes.

Pros:

  • Ability to gain root access to hosting account
  • More cost effective than a dedicated server
  • Less exposed to server abuse

Cons:

  • Still a semi-shared environment
  • Resource limitations may hinder busier sites

Dedicated Server

Dedicated servers are physical hardware boxes that can be leased from us and used as your own web server. They allow the highest amount of customization, stability, and performance, while still offering 100 percent fully managed cPanel support. Our dedicated server line ranges from entry level to enterprise solutions. The hardware and software options for our dedicated servers are completely customizable in order to fit any need and/or budget. Due to the fact that all of your accounts are hosted on one server without any other users, your exposure to server abuse is extremely limited. Upgrading a cPanel server is relatively seamless and requires no changes in DNS. While any client can sign up for a dedicated server, they are typically used by those who host high traffic sites and whose data needs to have a high degree of redundancy.

Pros:

  • Completely customizable hardware and software options
  • Most stable and scalable hosting service available
  • Total account isolation
  • High degree of redundancy
  • Easy to upgrade
  • Fully managed cPanel support

Cons:

  • Moderate to high monthly cost
  • Software license not bundled in plans
  • Upgrades require a small amount of downtime
